A McKenzie Friend assists a litigant in person in a court of law in England and Wales. This person does not need to be legally qualified. The crucial point is that litigants in person are entitled to have assistance, lay or professional, unless there are exceptional circumstances.
If there are possibilities of a Tenant raising a ( spurious ) defence, a McKenzie Friend such as a professional Possession advocate – POSSESSION FRIEND – can deal with this by addressing the court on your behalf. Normally only legally qualified solicitors can address the court, however, with the courts permission – rarely declined, a McKenzie Friend can address the court on a claimants behalf. Again, presence of a McKenzie Friend is not often required. The benefits and applicability to each case can be discussed.
