McKenzie Friend
They assist a litigant in person in a court of law in England and Wales. This person does not need legally qualifications to do so. The crucial point is that litigants in person can have assistance, lay or professional. Unless there are exceptional circumstances.
There are possibilities of a Tenant raising a (spurious) defence. A ‘Friend’ such as a professional Possession advocate – POSSESSION FRIEND – can deal with this, addressing the court on your behalf.
Normally only solicitors with legal qualifications can address the court. However, with the court’s permission – which they rarely decline, a ‘Friend’ can address the court on a claimant’s behalf. Again, presence of such a ‘Friend’ isn’t often a requirement. The benefits and applicability to each case can be discussed. Guidance is also available via this document.
